Music : Sound and the Fury

A week on the scene

Hays commission

On Saturday, June 3, Casbeers hosts the Country Giant Jamboree, a tribute to local music heavyweight Richard Hays, who passed away five years ago. Hays played a key role in bands such as the Country Giants and the Hickoids, and many of his friends will take part in the gathering, including T. Tex Edwards, The Ideals, Misty White, Ty Gavin, and Stickpony. That same night, alt-folk prodigy Marcus Rubio celebrates the release of his highly accomplished sophomore CD, Rhapsody in Plaid, with a show at the Red Room (1903 S. St. Mary’s). Expect Rubio to include plenty of his inspired violin loops, which are generally prepared specifically for each show. On Friday, June 2, the Red Room welcomes another left-of-center songwriter: Austin iconoclast Billy Harvey.

Patron of the blues

Though he wasn’t a performer, no figure did more to advance the cause of Texas blues over the last three-plus decades than Clifford Antone, who founded a namesake club and record label devoted to the musical genre he cherished above all others. Over time, he became synonymous with blues and roots music in the Capital City, and his club (which has occupied four locations) a center of high-powered jams.

Antone (like Janis Joplin, a native of Port Arthur) died on Tuesday, May 23, at the age of 56, and the Austin music scene gathered in full force for a tribute at Antone’s the following night. At press time, a larger festival in his honor was tentatively planned for Saturday, June 3, at the Palmer Events Center in Austin.
