Music : Sound and the Fury

A week on the scene

Lotus position

Local hip-hop collective Lotus Tribe is taking a break from studio work to host a show at Sanctuary (1818 N. Main) on Saturday, June 24. The show features a three-round MC battle with cash prizes, and will also include performances by Culture Sound, Cerebral Vortex, and DJs Tech-neek and 7ish. That same night, Bombasta (with trumpeter Jacinto LeFebre taking a short paternity-leave break) bring their rhythmic hijinks to Ruta Maya Riverwalk Coffeehouse (107 E. Martin) for one of their typically raucous gigs. The band expects to complete recording of a new CD in July or August.

A very different musical option this weekend comes from Eric Hanke, one of the promising young songwriters schooled on classic Texas folk storytellers such as Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. The Dallas native makes a tour stop at the Red Room (1903 S. St. Mary’s) on Saturday, June 24. Call 218-3442 for more info.

Hotter love

The acclaim for Buttercup’s Hot Love extended to National Public Radio last week when the album’s infectious title song was selected as NPR’s “Song of the Day” for June 15. David Brown writes on NPR’s website (, “The track conjures an alternate universe where Ray Davies and David Byrne collaborate on jangly pop songs with unexpected twists in the shade of the Alamo.”
