Neil Young + Promise of the Real Staff Pick

When: Tue., April 26, 6 p.m. 2016
Price: $78.52-$3,177.83
As if “Old Man” didn’t make it clear enough, Neil Young’s discography is tailor-made for intergenerational connection. If you were born after Reagan and are worth your salt, you should be intimately familiar with at least one non-Harvest album from the world’s best bad singer. (Mine is my uncle’s threadbare tape copy of On the Beach, on which Young sounds just like Mac DeMarco wishes he did.) At 70, Young continues to bridge the generational divide by employing Promise of the Real as his backing band. Led by Lukas Nelson — the son of the Red-Headed Stranger — Promise of the Real has backed Young since 2015’s The Monsanto Years, a concept-album damning the agribusiness giant. It’s not quite the DEVO-Young collab of yore, let alone a reincarnation of Crazy Horse, but with the capable rock ‘n’ roll band behind the Canadian icon, Young sounds 10 years his junior. With Lucinda Williams.
