NEW WAVE HAVEN

Simultaneously reeking of retro and avant-garde, Sin 13's monthly Atari.ka is an androgynous fashion statement

Music, fashion, and artistic decorations blend together in a stimulating dance party that simultaneously reeks of retro and avant-garde. Spawned from trips to an Austin venue that featured a similar event, Atari.ka's recent inception in SA has garnered crowds three times the size of our two-steps-ahead-of-cool, neighboring city's.

Atiri.ka features electroclash, a more modern, European-inspired genre heavily laden with drum machine beats and keyboards - exemplified by Ladytron, Chicks on Speed, and Tracy and the Plastics.

Featuring resident DJs Activision, Collecovision, and Intelivision, Atari.ka's music cannot be pigeonholed into one encompassing "electronic" label. Electroclash is a more modern, European-inspired genre heavily laden with drum machine beats and keyboards - exemplified by Ladytron, Chicks on Speed, and Tracy and the Plastics. Finally women rule a genre. The synth-punk sound has a louder, guitar-driven sound with roots stemming from Devo to Tears for Fears to contemporary artists such as Peaches, who also incorporates her own rap style. Atari.ka also features occasional guest acts, including Houston-based DJ Nuromatik, who gets sharp approval for her impeccable taste in the fine electro arts.

With cutting edge music also comes a new fashion trend. Kelly describes his own Atari.ka-inspired outfit as "checkered Vans shoes, parachute pants, a polyester multi-colored shirt, and white tie." Of course, you can enjoy futuristic New Wave in any ol' outfit, but should you feel the need to reinvent yourself for a few hours, do it with anything

plastic, white, clear, or flashy (think "Like a Virgin"-era Madonna meets Deter from the Saturday Night Live "Sprockets"). As an added bonus, despite the techno-ish flavor, baggy pants and pacifiers are not typical trappings. However, neon make-up, asymmetrical haircuts, faux-hawks, and gaudy jewelry are a plus. The evening is androgyny at every angle.

The club transforms into a New Wave haven every Atari.ka night. Bright pink neon netting hangs dangerously close to hardened hairspray bangs, spiraling cutouts hover above the bar, and a backdrop of black light and eye-catching images play against the dance floor wall. Some costumed showgoers may find themselves blending in with the background.

Lies, deception, bribery - whatever it takes - the cover is free and the drinks are cheap. Your colleagues will thank you for the change of pace on a Wednesday or Thursday night, even if they go home with unintended eye make up or Ladytron's "The Way That I Found You" stuck in their heads. •
