All about sprawl
Bexar County Audubon Society meets on Thursday, January 12 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss how San Antonio became a sprawling metropolis. In a talk entitled “Best Laid Plans: How San Antonio Grew,” Trinity University history professor and director of urban studies Char Miller will explain the historical relationship between city policies and urban development from the 18th century and today. City Arborist Debbie Reid will discuss three proposed Tree Preservation Ordinance amendments. Recycle your tannenbaum
Around the first of the year, that once-glorious Christmas tree begins to get ugly: The needles have turned brown, the garland has been shredded by the family cat, and several bulbs have burned out.
You can recycle your fresh (not artificial) tree Wednesday, January 11, by placing it on your front curb no later than 7 a.m. Strip the tree of all decorations, nails, and stands; don’t wrap it in plastic. Trees longer than 6 feet should be cut in half. Flocked trees are accepted.
The trees will be shredded into pine mulch at the Bitters Brush Recycling Center, 1800 Bitters Road. The mulch will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning January 21 — bring a recent CPS bill to prove you have paid your solid-waste fee in order to avoid being charged for the mulch.
Register to vote
February 6, 2006 is the last day to register to vote for the March 7 primary. Early voting is scheduled for February 21 through March 3. The primaries include races for governor, all 150 State House of Representatives seats, 16 State Senate seats, all 32 congressional seats, 1 U.S. Senate seat, and various statewide offices, including the agriculture commissioner, attorney general, lieutenant governor, eight State Board of Education seats, and numerous judicial contests.
