Nuts to Crack: Where to Catch a Performance of The Nutcracker in San Antonio

For many children, The Nutcracker provides a first exposure to ballet and classical music. Set to Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, the magical tale of Marie and her Nutcracker Prince has become synonymous with the holiday season. And it’s not just young girls who dream of dancing like the Sugar Plum Fairy — boys too are enchanted by the marching toy soldiers and the battle with the evil Mouse King depicted in most productions. The Nutcracker is also where many young performers first gain experience, whether with regional dance companies or alongside professional dance troupes. While George Balanchine’s choreography originally called for 35 child roles, many of today’s productions have expanded the roles of youth performers. For adults, The Nutcracker offers a rich and often visually stunning experience. (It’s also one of the few ballets they’ll shell out the big bucks for — especially if their children land a role.) Locally, several performing arts groups, as well as traveling companies, have made The Nutcracker an annual tradition. While Ballet San Antonio’s beloved production wrapped up earlier this month, there’s still a handful of nuts left to crack.
