Where do uniconchas go when they're not being sold out of
Panifico Bake Shop's Westside outpost? Some magical land made solely of baked goods with gingerbread people and rivers of hot Abuelita chocolate? We may never know, but what we do know is that the popular pan dulce is returning to Panifico this weekend.
From July 14 through 16, uniconchas, galaxy donuts and unicorn donuts will be available during normal business hours.
The success of the previous Fantasy Weekend encouraged owner Edna Miggins to bring back the multi-color goodies.
"It was insane. We didn't really know what to expect," said Miggins of the deluge of people who stopped by the shop to pick up their own uniconcha. Though she compares the madness to that of Spurs donuts come playoff times (and her bakers argue this was "crazier"), Miggins and her husband are unknowingly adding a new customer base to the storied panaderia.
"We're seeing people who might not have known what pan dulce was before, or wouldn't have embraced it, they're coming in because it's trendy and fun," Miggins said.
And to motivate the 'grammers and Snapchatters, Miggins is adding a backdrop from Cositas San Antonio in case folks want to take selfies or photos of the treats.
Conchas are 80 cents, a minimal 10-cent mark-up from their regular flavors.
Miggins doesn't see herself adding the uniconchas to their menu, so as to keep that elusive mystique going, so make sure to pencil in time this weekend to grab a uniconcha of your own.
