Paseo Por El Westside

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-05-19

When the historic preservation-minded folks at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center rescued two homes in danger of demolition, el Rinconcito de Esperanza was born. The quaint, grassroots community center on Colorado Street provides a progressive example of the word “community” in a neighborhood that gets pigeonholed as unsafe. The paseo includes two walking tours (9 a.m. and 11 a.m.) highlighting local landmarks, such as the “Pink Building,” which is also in danger of being razed. Neighbors and visitors will revisit the neighborhood’s rich history by sharing ghost stories, exchanging plantitas, and enjoying live music courtesy of accordionist Eva Ybarra and “tesoro del Westside” Rita Vidaurri, who’ll celebrate her 86th birthday by singing rancheras to the crowd. Free, 9am-2pm, El Rinconcito de Esperanza, 816 & 820 S. Colorado, esperanzacenter.org.
