Pearl Charles & Sammy Brue

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Pearl Charles comes to town with her band this weekend for the second time this year. And, as far as we’re concerned, she can keep on coming back as often as she pleases. Charles dropped her first LP, Sleepless Dreamer, in February, picking up right where she left off with her near-perfect, self-titled debut EP back in 2015. Charles, through her time spent in throwback rock act the Blank Tapes, alt-country act the Driftwood Singers, and at CalArts, where she studied music, has arrived at a sound that is as tight as it is effortless. Jangly, gently psychedelic and frequently catchy, Charles’ songs on both of her recorded efforts (check ‘em out at pearlcharlesmusic.bandcamp.com) combine Laurel Canyon hippie country vibes with a smart and casually world-weary pop sensibility. The result is music that is a joy to listen to, but also is intricate and (lyrically speaking) deep enough to be as rewarding on listen number 100 as it was on listen number one.
