Even though she didn’t write it, Dolly Parton’s defiant 1967 hit “Dumb Blonde” has followed her from Smoky Mountain poverty to global fame. In 1980’s 9 to 5, Parton aced her first movie role and challenged the dumb blonde stereotype as quick-witted secretary Doralee Rhodes. Nearly three decades after the girl-powered comedy gave The Empire Strikes Back a run for its money, Parton and screenwriter Patricia Resnick teamed up for 9 to 5: The Musical, a bubbly affair that closely follows the film’s plot (three office-bound gals get revenge on their “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” boss). Pegged as an “overinflated whoopee cushion” by The New York Times, the musical made Broadway history in ’09 with a record 15 Drama Desk nominations.
