Pick of the Day: Anime at the Alamo: Goemon

Goemon 2

Anime at the Alamo steps out of the box and into hot water with a free screening of Kazuaki Kiriya’s live action historical fantasy Goemon. Starring Y?suke Eguchi as Ishikawa Goemon, the 2009 film is a fictional account of a very real 16th-century Japanese outlaw, folk hero, and pop culture icon who mirrored Robin Hood by stealing gold and other valuables from the rich and gifting them to the needy. In actuality, Goemon and his son were boiled alive in 1594 in front of a Buddhist temple in Kyoto following the failed assassination of the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi ? giving the goemonburo (or Goemon bath, a large kettle-shaped tub) its name. Free; 7:30pm Mon, Jul 30; Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes, 1255 SW Loop 410, (210) 677-8500, drafthouse.com/san_antonio/westlakes. Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here: calendar.sacurrent.com.
