San Marcos officials discovered a portable methamphetamine lab Sunday at an abandoned Burger King off of I-35.

According to a press release from the City of San Marcos, the San Marcos Fire Department’s hazmat unit and the Hays County Narcotics Task Force arrived after police responded to a suspicious person call around 2 p.m., where they found a backpack behind the abandoned restaurant near a homeless camp.

Officials discovered several containers inside the backpack holding materials described as “the makings of a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory.” One of these materials included an acidic powder which burned an officer.
The hazmat unit, narcotics task force and Fire Marshal’s Office sanitized the area while a third-party hazmat company disposed of the substances.

Authorities have yet to make any arrests or identify anyone connected to the lab. The area was deemed safe around 10 p.m.
