Prefuse's 2001 debut album, Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives, inspired its own devoted following with its rich layering of signature beats, blips, bleeps, and vocals. The sound, ambient experimentation in sonic texturing spliced with rhyme rather than featuring straightforward rap, stood apart from that of Herren's hip-hop contemporaries. Prefuse's 2003 follow-up, One Word Extinguisher, is another subtle sound collage, smartly fusing old-skool funk with futuristic vibes, film noir sampling, and a welcome appearance by Def Jux MC Mr. Lif.
Prefuse 73 pulls a two-night stint at the Parish (formerly Mercury Entertainment) at Jazz in Austin on Tuesday, October 14, and Wednesday, October 15. Beans of the Brooklyn-based Antipop Consortium opens. •
