Raices Americanas: Recent Acquisitions of Pre-Colombian Art

The San Antonio Museum of Art will present Raices Americanos: Recent Acquistions of Pre-Colombian Art October 11 through February 2015. This exhibition will shed light on the exceptional skill and creative spirit of Ancient America. SAMA has a small, superb collection of pre-Colombian art representing most of ancient Latin America. This art has strong ties to San Antonio representing the cultural roots of the city and over 65% of its citizenry. The exhibition features recent acquisitions of art from the Taino Culture of the Greater Antilles, Chupicuaro Culture of Guanajuanto, Mexico, and Tarascan Culture of Michoacan, Mexico. The art produced by these enigmatic cultures is partly idiosyncratic, but it is also informed by larger artistic trends of the pre-Colombian world. All of the objects in this exhibition were made and used for rituals associated with human burials or in homage to local deities.

“Absolutely perfect weekend getaway! We were worried that it might be too hot inside the tent, as both my husband and I love our room cold, but it was perfect around 70 degrees…especially in the summer. Bed was very comfortable and you could just sink in and sleep. I slept so deeply. It is a beautiful, serene place to stay and I could not recommend it more!” - Yelper Larissa I
