When it’s not being played for plants as part of a science fair project, classical music nowadays is probably most often sold as a calming escape from fast-paced modern life, so a performance of a selection from Johann Sebastian Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier sponsored by Red Bull energy drink seems counter-intuitive unless a harpsichord is getting dropped off a cliff or something. But Bach, who took the work where he could get it, worked out many of his compositions in a Leipzig coffee house and actually wrote a piece titled the Coffee Cantata. And as Berlin’s Flying Steps breakdancing crew proves in this internationally touring stage show, the uptempo passages from Clavier are better suited for six-stepping than sleeping it off and even hip-hop-inspired beat embellishments sound natural set in this almost impossibly timeless piece of music. Going beyond a gimmick, Flying Bach gracefully headspins across centuries and cultures to honor the intentions of the composer who wrote that Clavier is “for the profit and use of musical youth desirous of learning.” Bach, much like Wu-Tang, is for the children.
