Lol, your cries have been heard, San Antonio.

After an outpouring of criticism toward the city for booking Pat Benatar and REO Speedwagon to headline this year's NYE celebration, it looks like the Tricentennial Commision has stepped up their game and secured Flaco Jiménez to the list of performers slated to bring in 2018.

Former Current music editor Travis Buffkin wrote about Jiménez a few years ago, and his words about the revered artist are worth soaking in again, especially since the accordionist is arguably the only artist booked so far that deserves to represent San Antonio on that stage.

“I don't respect Flaco Jiménez because the Grammys gave him a Lifetime Achievement Award after 67 years of playing masterful accordion, but because he spent those 67 years in relative obscurity, as a master …. That, to me, is why Flaco is great. That is why his solo records are great. That is why The Texas Tornados are great. That is why Los Texmaniacs con Flaco Jiménez are great. That is why San Antonio is great. The Stones, the group credited with pushing Flaco through to the (white, non-Texan) mainstream with 1994's Voodoo Lounge, are pleased to take your $70 for nosebleeds to watch Mick gyrate on the Jumbotron, but you can see Flaco, nuestro maestro, at Rosedale Park for $12. And that's steep for a Flaco gig.”

Now you can see Jiménez, literally a living legend, for free, representing San Antonio the way we actually should be represented.
