Marshall Mathers’s straight-up hatred of the music-buying masses oozes from single “We Made You.” His class-clowning hits Epic Movie mode, taking lazy pokes at pop-culture piñatas six months outdated. (Who’s Sarah Palin again?) The real hatred is reserved for himself, though.

“Déjà Vu” chronicles Eminem’s recent addiction problems in painful detail. “My Mom” returns to the Munchausen-by-proxy accusations from “Cleaning Out My Closet,” but concludes that his pill-popping has made him just like his despised mother. Relapse gets even more personal than we’ve come to expect, but Mathers characteristically refuses to stay serious. “Insane” undercuts some heavy molestation claims with manic cartoon violence and an explanation of “felching.” (If you don’t know, don’t ask.) “Medicine Ball” declares “I guess it’s time for you to hate me again” with a 9-year-old fart-lighter’s glee. Way-too-elaborate rape fantasy “Stay Wide Awake,” celebutante murder ballad “Same Song & Dance,” and an f-word (hint: not “fuck”) carpet-bombing in “Underground” should do the trick, but after a decade of this shit, the only real shock is that I still want to hear Relapse 2.
