As part of Notre Dame’s Actors from the London Stage program, UTSA’s Department of English is hosting a five-person production of Shakepeare’s Richard III with a twist – four out of the five cast members are women. The titular villain, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, is played by Liz Crowther, a veteran of the London stage who may also be recognizable from several appearances on the BBC (credits include Miss Marple and Mansfield Park), and Alice Haig plays both the doomed Lady Anne and the Earl of Richmond, which adds a tinge of vengeance to Richmond’s final defeat of the hunchbacked Duke in battle. (“My kingdom for a horse,” indeed!) The small production requires the performers to revolve through roles at a breakneck pace, and is an excellent opportunity to witness experienced actors display their range in one of the Bard’s most celebrated plays.
