Richie Havens (1941-2013)

Beloved folk icon Richie Havens died this morning at his home in New Jersey from a sudden heart attack. He was 72.

Even though he was never a mega-seller, he was instantly immortalized by his stirring Woodstock performance in 1969.

Also known for his covers of pop, rock, and folk classics, he reached no. 16 in Billboard's Hot 100 single charts with his cover of the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun," the opening track of 1971's Alarm Clock (which peaked at no. 29 in the Billboard Top 200 chart).

In 2010, Havens spoke with the Current days before his show at the Majestic. Shortly after that show he retired from touring.
