Mark Schlesinger
Much like his public artworks on concrete along the San Antonio River, artist Mark Schlesinger’s recent paintings on canvas are focused on color, form and texture. Unlike most traditional paintings, Schlesinger’s canvases do not wrap around their wooden stretchers but are instead adhered to the front, a strategy that highlights the materiality of the artist’s constructions, leaving them exposed at their sides. Here, Schlesinger depicts amoeba-like figures, each touching, merging or perhaps overlapping, in what are heavily nuanced works begging for repeated viewings.

On Wednesday, Ruiz-Healy Art presents “Hello Stranger(s),” an exhibition of new work featuring the artist’s abstract paintings and drawings. A New York painter-turned San Antonio resident, Schlesinger’s latest body of work and playful approach is a nod to modern masters Paul Cézanne and Barnett Newman.

Free, Wed Jan. 24, 6-8pm, (on view through March 10), Ruiz-Healy Art, 201 E. Olmos Drive, (210) 804-2219, ruizhealyart.com. Want to keep up with all the happenings in San Antonio? Subscribe to our Weekend Newsletter.
