Sake Bombs Are Highlight of Kung Fu Kitchen Happy Hour

Name: Kung Fu Kitchen Patio and Bar

What's the Concept: The Southtown kitchen is the brainchild of Eric Lopez and Adrian Martinez, who also opened Smoke: BBQ Brew Venue (formerly Smoke Downtown), and the now closed Flying Pig BBQ  in Stone Oak. It opened in July of this year and has been serving favorites staples like flatbreads, burgers, and popular Americanized Chinese staples.

Happy Hour: Runs Monday through Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. and then all day Sunday. Features include $1 off all beer and wine, $2 off cocktails and apps, and $3 0ff flatbreads.

Who You'll See: The crowd varies there are those that are younger and fresh to the world of bars, and those that are more seasoned that come in for cold beer while watching a game.

Experience: When I visited Kung Fu Kitchen it was late on a Sunday night, and it was pretty slow. The staff however friendly, was not attentive. It took awhile to order, and once the order was placed and the food arrived, they didn't check on us at all. I ordered the chicken lettuce wraps, priced at $6 during happy hour, and they were middle of the road. A highlight on the menu is the sake bomb (a shot of sake dropped into Sapporo beer). At $3 it's a great deal — you could down three and rack up a tab less than $10. The rest of the drink menu is filled with cocktails that were overly sweet for my taste, though they might be adored by one with an affinity for sugary beverages. I barely touched my drink and the server didn't seem to notice — or if he did, didn't care — and instead just dropped a bill off without saying a word. Another ding on the service side. Taking in my experience as a whole, I'm glad I tried it, but wouldn't go back unless I wanted to slam some sake.
