Sala Diaz Debate Team

When: Thu., March 29, 7-9 p.m. 2018
Price: Free
Local filmmaker and physics teacher Jason Treviño has never participated in an official high school-style debate before, so he’s hoping his first experience will be kind to him. He is one of six captains leading a team in a debate tournament Sala Diaz is calling “an exercise in absurdity.” Sala Diaz director Anjali Gupta said the event is an extension of artist Nicholas Frank and John Riepenhoff’s current exhibition, which features audio pieces inside beer cans that are debating various topics — “some humorous, some contentious and some ridiculous.” Treviño is torn between wanting a topic he already feels passionate about and challenging himself to defend something he normally would not. “Art and science would be my comfort zones,” he said. “Now, if I had to take a pro-gun stance, I’d imagine I’d really have to be acting a part.” Other debate team captains are business owner Grace Rose Gonzales, attorney Ricardo Briones, Glasstire editor Christina Rees, writer Neil Fauerso and artist Katie Pell. Let’s cross our fingers that the debate doesn’t play out like Alicia Silverstone’s in Clueless. “May I please remind you that it does not say RSVP on the Statue of Liberty.” Debaters, be sure to spit out your gum before you argue your point.
