Screaming Females

New Jersey indie rock/punk trio Screaming Females – which, incidentally, would make a great name for the biography of a certain recently appointed Supreme Court Justice – has honed and refined its sound over the course of seven LPs and countless shows. On its first several albums, the group explored an everything-including-the-kitchen-sink sound, adorning its energetic punk core with everything from swing to pop, from experimental rock to an arty adaptation of alternative rock. On its past few albums, however, Screaming Females has distilled the best parts of its sound into a powerful concentrate. It’s clutter-free and far from the pitfalls of even the most interesting and engaging minimalism. In fact, for our money, the band’s most recent album, All at Once, out earlier this year, is the best thing it’s ever done.
