Instituto shows Gavaldon's debut film / La Tuna's cinema on the slab / Boxer up at Alamo Drafthouse

La Barraca / The Cabin
Dir. Roberto Gavaldon (1944)
Gavaldon's debut film, an adaptation of a popular novel by Spaniard Vicente Blasco Ibañez, won 10 Ariel prizes, including best film and best director. It will screen at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 5 at the Instituto de México, 600 Hemisfair Park. Admission is free.

The Jungle Book

Before there was Disney there was this live-action version of the story of little Mowgli, a boy among the wolves of India who longs to find his human family. The film screens at dusk Thursday, June 2 at the Slab at Probandt and Cevallos, across from La Tuna Icehouse. Admission is free. For more info, visit saevents.org/movies/index.htm.

Boxer up!

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema takes one of 2005's most-hyped movies, boxing tale Cinderella Man, to reality-TV lows with a boxing ring for cinephiles who want to be a contender. The gloves go on at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 4. Admission is $5.50. For more info, visit alamodrafthouse.com/westlakes.
