Screens That’s a wrap

The low-down on this week’s premieres

In Last Holiday, Academy Award-nominated actress Queen Latifah (Chicago) plays Georgia Byrd, a sales associate and novice chef who learns she has a terminal disease. Hoping to treat herself to some of the experiences she has never had, including snowboarding, deep-tissue massage, and base jumping, she travels to Europe to live the life she always dreamed of — even if it is only for a few weeks. The film is directed by Wayne Wang (The Joy Luck Club).

A film Ridley Scott (Gladiator) planned to direct in the ’70s before he decided to make Alien instead, Tristan & Isolde finally comes to the big screen to tell the medieval love story between a noble knight (James Franco) and the future and married Queen of England (Sophia Myles). The film is directed by Kevin Reynolds (The Count of Monte Cristo).

CURRENT ONLINE

Like his 2000 film Remember the Titans, producer and motion-picture industry tool Jerry Bruckheimer brings us another true story about a team that overcomes racial adversity in Glory Road. Here, college basketball coach Don Haskins (Josh Lucas) turns heads in 1960s Texas when he puts five black men on the court for his starting lineup.

In the animated film Hoodwinked, the children’s story Little Red Riding Hood is turned into a crime thriller as a police detective questions Red (Anne Hathaway) about the incidents that occured at Grandma’s house. What’s next? Goldilocks gets arrested for breaking and entering or the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe is indicted for child endangerment?

Ushpizin, the film about an Orthodox Jewish couple entertaining uninvited guests during the Succoth holiday `see “Kosher cinema,” December 22-28, 2005`, was pushed back again and is currently scheduled to open this week. If that doesn’t get your schmatta in a schtunk, I don’t know what will.

Local premiere dates for limited-release films are tentative and can change at the last minute. Please check your local theater listings to confirm showtimes.
