Screens That's a wrap

The low-down on this week’s premieres

From stiletto pumps to ankle-strap heels to rhinestone sandals, In Her Shoes opens up the well-stocked closet of straight-arrow lawyer Rose Feller (Toni Collette) and introduces us to her wild sister Maggie (Cameron Diaz) who Rose can’t control. After a fight, Maggie searches for her estranged grandmother (Shirley MacLaine) to learn about her past while Rose looks for love. The film is directed by Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confindental).

Think Office Space in a restaurant setting. With Waiting first-time director-screenwriter Rob McKittrick takes us into the loopy and sometimes disturbing world of food service. Ryan Reynolds (Van Wilder) plays Monty, a waiter at Shenanigan’s, a popular Bennigan’s-like eatery, who passes time during the workday with horseplay.

Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit follows the two well-known animated clay figures as they hunt for the mysterious beast that is destroying their vegetable plots. Director Nick Park said this is a “vegetarian horror movie,” so maybe the killer uses a carrot peeler.

After an injury sidelines him for the season, college football player Brandon Lang (Matthew McConaughey) switches teams and begins to work for high-profile bookie Walter Abrams (Al Pacino) in Two for the Money. With millions of dollars riding on Brandon’s football predictions, it’s a game of con or be conned for the sports gamblers.

Some people bite their fingernails, others may pick their nose. For 17-year-old Justin Cobb (Lou Taylor Pucci) his bad habit comes in the form of sucking his thumb. In Thumbsucker, Justin attempts to break his childish routine `see review in this issue of the Current`. The film also stars Tilda Swinton (Broken Flowers), Keanu Reeves (Constantine), and Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers).

Local premiere dates for limited-release films are tentative and can change at the last minute. Please check your local theater listings to confirm showtimes.
