This weekend, the Briscoe Western Art Museum kicks off an exciting new program entitled Sounds of the West: Music Salon Series. The series seeks to illuminate the rich cultural history of the old (and not so old) West through song and the exploration of various aspects of songcraft. For its opening number, Sounds of the West offers “Settling the West in American Popular Songs,” to be presented by music scholar Michael Lasser with some assists from vocalist/pianist Alan Jones and vocalist Cindy Miller. The show, which should make for a unique afternoon combining history, art and music, specifically centers on “popular songs about the West from the late 19th to the middle of the 20th century.”
