Parents gather outside of an Italy High School building Monday morning.
A 15-year-old girl has been hospitalized with a gunshot wound after a teenage boy opened fire at Ellis County's Italy High School Monday morning.

Ellis County Sheriff's Office currently has a 16-year-old male suspect, a fellow IHS student, in custody.

Witnesses say the shooting in the tiny town of Italy (around 40 miles south of Dallas), began a little before 9 a.m. Monday morning. People pulling into the school parking lot told local reporters with CBS they saw students sprinting toward them from the school, hopping over a chain link fence to escape the gun fire.

The 15-year-old student was airlifted to a Dallas hospital to treat her injuries.

We'll update this story as more information is released.
