Signs Point to Davis Run for Texas Governor, Formal Announcement Next Week

Update: Sen. Wendy Davis plans to make her formal campaign announcement in Haltom City, Texas (north of Ft. Worth) on Thursday, October 3 at the Wiley G. Thomas Coliseum, the same spot where she received her high school diploma. Doors will open to the public at 3:00 pm, according to a media advisory. It’s really a saying-it-without-saying it situation. While she won’t formally announce until Oct. 3, it’s clear state Senator and filibuster champ Wendy Davis will likely run for Texas Governor. A trickle of media reports today, starting with Politico, claim Davis advisors have started, “informing influential Democrats that she intends to run for governor in 2014,” according to, “multiple sources familiar with Davis’s conversations.” A Tweet by Davis today served to reinforce the heavy speculation:

The link takes readers to a page requesting a donation to meet an $80,000 goal by September 30. Davis, who now famously stood on the Texas Senate floor for 13 hours in an effort to block an anti-abortion bill, would face off the well-moneyed Republican conservative Attorney General Greg Abbott in the 2014 gubernatorial bout. The AG made his own “big” announcement in San Antonio, as the Current reported in mid-July. Abbott has raised more than $20 million so far, while Davis– still unannounced and with the strength of a new, fired-up grassroots movement– has generated more than $1 million, according to Texas Ethics Commission filings. Stay tuned for the official bid.
