S'Nuff Film

Somedays, when I’m staring all puppy-dog-faced at my empty fan mailbox, I remind myself that my countless weeks (six) of unsung heroics as Alamo City’s screens patrolman are merely time killed until my unsold, as-yet-unfinished screenplay about Richard Nixon’s radioactive penis sweeps the Oscars. Then we’ll see who’s really a “disgrace to his or her profession,” Mom.

For all us aspiring screenwriters, UCLA film professor Bill Boyle will present “The Visual Mindscape of the Screenplay,” 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 24, at the Brazan branch of the public library (2200 W. Commerce). Boyle will discuss aspects of well-written screenplays, citing clips from classic films as examples. Admission is free; go to sanantonio.gov/library for more info.

Also useful to aspiring screenwriters and also beginning September 24: Get a singing-dancing glimpse at the heartbreak awaiting you as an up-and-coming writer in the Broadway musical Rent. The long-running play’s closing night was filmed in high def, and it will be showing in several local theaters for a few days. Passes ($20 through thehotticket.net) aren’t cheap enough for us Gen X Bohemian types, but the irony of getting evicted because you bought tickets to Rent is freaking exquisite.
