They say there are three things in life which you can count on – Death, Taxes and CHANGE, and for its upcoming February program, SOLI is focusing on the latter. For better or worse, change finds all of us on the colorful crossroads of life. Change takes us on a journey, sometimes outwardly but always inwardly: the memory of a lost loved one, or the immigration of a family. Change can sometimes enlighten us, moving us into an almost spiritual state of ecstasy. Whether in a figurative or literal way, composers narrate the personal stories of their own life experiences and emotions. Chinese American composer Chen Yi tells the powerful story of her lost mentor and teacher through Memory. Through The Fence, The Rooftop, and the Distant Sea, Syrian-born composer and clarinetist Kinan Azmeh takes us on a tour of emotion in each soulful note, expressing the heartache of loss and the joy of reconnecting with days gone by. In Dervish, Belize-born British composer Errollyn Wallen captures the atmosphere of the ancient Sufi dance through its swirling skirts and ancient myth. And Jonathan B. Holland tosses fragments of musical conversation from instrument to instrument which ultimately come together as an interconnected whole.
