SOLI Dance Party with DJ Soli and Marcus Rubio

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-05-11

The final 2010-11 season performance by the SOLI Chamber Ensemble is special — DJ SOLI is in tha house! Sort of. DJ SOLI is nothing but Ertan Torgul (violin), Stephanie Key (clarinet), Carolyn True (piano), and David Mollenauer (cello), performing alongside Marcus Rubio, who will run all the electronics/beats in a night of Jimi Hendrix, Astor Piazzolla (a contemporary re-working of his “Le Grand Tango” for cello and piano), and an unconventional tango piece by John Mackey. Also expect a retuning of Nick Drake, Radiohead (“Airbag” and “Karma Police”), DBR, and others. “It’s been one of the most exciting, fun things I’ve worked on,” Rubio told the Current. “It’s a dance party theme, so it will be different from a traditional chamber music concert. Pieces will segue into each other and overlap and create more of a ‘club’ atmosphere feel.” Besides the music, there will be special lighting effects and and an after-party featuring art by Cathy Cunningham-Little. This pop-meets-classical event promises to be unlike any other. $20 general admission, $10 for Blue Star members, pre-concert talk at 7pm, concert at 7:30pm, Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, 116 Blue Star, (210) 980-3250,
