Sonic Provocations

Scheduled to run every Second Saturday from January to June, URBAN-15’s new exploratory sound series “Sonic Provocations” strikes up this weekend with multi-instrumentalists Richard Oppenheim and Rene Saenz. Both nationally recognized jazz saxophonists, Oppenheim and Saenz have performed across diverse genres — from tejano and jazz to country and blues — with the likes of Marvin Gaye, Tito Puente and Count Basie. Their 90-minute concert at URBAN-15 pairs original works with interpretations of works by Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane and Charles Mingus. Held in conjunction with DreamWeek, the performance highlights the historical significance of jazz to civil rights struggles via a freeform interpretation of Mingus’ classic “Prayer for Passive Resistance.”
