They would walk 500 miles to sing cool punk rock covers and originals. Or fly. Whatever. Check out Down by Law at Sam's Burger Joint on Saturday, July 12.

AIN'T GOT NO KLASSEN

Between public library gigs and his job at a record store, Christopher Klassen, aka DJ Klassen, doesn't have time to work on the second installment of a four-part project with local artist and producer Ernest Gonzales. So the release date for his next minidisc - a follow-up to last month's Polaroid - is a little behind schedule.

To make it up to the masses clamoring for more mad glitches and esoteric sampling, Klassen is taking his tables to Taco Land (103 W. Grayson, 223-8406) for a little live action. On Thursday, July 10, Klassen, DJ Jester, DJ Smarty Pants, and the Spark will make you shake your booty like it's been shot.

"They're true hustlaz," says Gonzales, who will join the lineup if his teacher lets him out of class early that night, "and the show is gonna be doper than a Def Leppard concert in a Wal-Mart parking lot."

In the meantime, Klassen and Gonzales will continue to work on the second minidisc. "We're at eight minutes so far," explains Gonzales. "There will be four discs released in total. Three will be 20-minute minidiscs, and the fourth will be a full disc, featuring the three sets, plus another 20-minute bonus."

Although the minidisc won't be available for the Taco Land show, Klassen and Gonzales project an August release. According to Gonzales, Klassen hopes to have installments three and four available at the same time. "But don't quote me on that," adds Gonzales. For copies of Polaroid, go to www.thephuture.net.

THE HUMP-DAY DANCE IS YOUR CHANCE

What to do on a Wednesday? Somewhere, amidst the sea of button-down shirts and pleated slacks, there is a diminutive DJ named Mel. He isn't at Rebar (8134 Broadway, 320-4091) to unwind after a long day at the mall or to pick up chicks. He's there to lay down some bumpin' beats, and not even the weekly commute from Austin is going to stop him. He's the new Wednesday night Rebar resident, and he's here to make the SA scene.

Unless you're looking for something a little more ... intimate. Then you might want to check out Mojoe at Jewels (5500 Babcock, 691-3000) on Wednesdays. The live band layers rich vocals over a sultry soul groove in a smoky, sexy setting. It's the perfect pretense for a cool drink and a good vibe.

Mojoe will also be at the Lounge at Avenue B (1033 Ave. B, 224-4005) on Saturday, July 12, with DJ Jester. •
