a week on the scene

Call it a dance floor, call it more drinking room, whatever. The Davenport (200 E. Houston, 354-1202) recently renovated its lower-level lounge to accommodate patrons who really want to get down. The remodeled room now allows patrons to cozy up to the DJ and two turntables tucked neatly into a tiny niche beneath the stairs - or to shake some serious leg.

Former Friday night resident DJ Deepfeel is now featured on Wednesday nights, throwing down sets of funk and groove, while House Nation DJ Rise maintains his Thursday night slot. During the weekend, the Davenport will book local and regional DJs, and the management eventually plans to bring international DJs down to the subterranean stage. Aficionados of conjunto music take note: Representatives of at least a dozen cultural organizations from around the state, in addition to a who's-who of musicians (including Oscar Hernandez of the legendary Conjunto Bernal), are gathering at a conjunto summit to discuss the present and future of conjunto education programs.

Hosted by Palo Alto College's Conjunto Music Program, the summit (dubbed "Teaching the Tradición") takes place on Saturday, December 6, from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the bandhall at PAC's Performing Arts Building, Room 113. It will be followed by a recital featuring students from PAC's conjunto ensemble. As part of the college's emphasis on the conjunto tradition, Hernandez will also complete a one-week residency at Palo Alto on December 6, offering instruction in the art of the button accordion and bajo sexto.
