Heart failure

Local goth-pop quintet Hearts Fail celebrated the release of its debut full-length CD, The Empty Promise, on Saturday, July 17 before an ardently devoted Sin 13 crowd. The band - best described as Joy Division meets the Thompson Twins, with some Richard Butler vocal affectations, and a raiding of Spandau Ballet's wardrobe closet - overcame early technical dysfunction from the guitar of lead singer Edward Wagner to deliver a set that that leaned heavily on Empty Promise material such as "The Architects of Love" and "Separate."

Return of the road king

Roots-rocking Beaumont native Jesse Dayton returns to town for a CD-release show at Casbeers (1719 Blanco Rd.) on Friday, July 23. Over the years, Dayton has played lead guitar for Ray Price and Waylon Jennings, jammed at Bill Clinton's second inaugural, and won plaudits from the late Johnny Cash. A rockabilly hellion who's increasingly explored his traditional country roots in recent years, Dayton's new CD - described as a bootleg collection - comes on the heels of his well-received third solo album, the 2001 release Hey Nashvegas, which featured the contributions of a number of prominent musical friends, including the Dixie Chicks and Jim Lauderdale.
