Sound and the Fury

Rick Broussard

A week on the scene

Floore's show

Floore's Country Store, Helotes' historic honky tonk (forgive the runaway alliteration) kicked off a new music series on November 3 with a gig by alt-country favorites, the Derailers. The series, called "KJ-97 Presents Free Fireside Concerts" (hosted by San Antonio contemporary C&W station, KAJA 97.3 FM), will offer some of Texas' premiere roots-music performers every Wednesday through the fall and winter months. The shows are free, and run from 7-9 p.m. Look for acclaimed Austin singer/songwriter Slaid Cleaves on November 24, and the Gourds will pay a visit to Floore's on December 1. Call 695-8827 for more info.

Hoots night

For 20 years, Rick Broussard's Two Hoots & a Holler has epitomized the best aspects of Texas roots music, merging rockabilly with trad-country and adding enough punk abandon and songwriting flair to keep the whole thing from sounding retro-gimmicky or quaint. First and foremost an unabashed fan, Broussard (who has roots in San Antonio and Seguin) recently joined forces with Fastball's Tony Scalzo in a cover band called the Mersey Lords, taking on the likes of the Beatles and the Clash.

But Broussard's primary musical outlet remains Two Hoots, and they will celebrate the release of their new live album, Songs Our Vinyl Taught Us, with a Friday, November 12 gig at The Cove, 606 W. Cypress. Opening the show will be local folk-rockers, The Infidels. Call 227-2683 for more info.
