Sound and the fury

ALL IN THE FAMILY
As always, summer in San Antonio this year has seen numerous multi-band festival celebrations of loud, overdriven guitars played with maximum ferocity. If Ozzfest, Vans Warped, and the homegrown Robb’s Metalworks Showcase didn’t satiate you, there’s at least one more opportunity for hard-rock catharsis before school starts.

Korn has relaunched the Family Values Tour they helped create in 1998 and they’re bringing along their ’90s altmetal brethren the Deftones as co-headliners. The tour, which hits Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre (16765 Lookout Road, in Selma) on Friday, August 4, will feature 10 bands performing on two stages. Along with the established headliners, the lineup will include the likes of Stone Sour, Bury Your Dead, Flyleaf, Dir En Grey, and 10 Years. Showtime is 2 p.m.

SAGE ADVICE
After a five-year absence, Ken Slavin returned to the Fairmount Hotel in May for a residency at Sage, and the gig has been a godsend for worshipers of the Great American Songbook. Few tackle the catalogs of Berlin, Porter, Arlen, Gershwin and company with the grace and ebullience of Slavin, and Sage has proven to be a natural fit for him. He’s performing there every Friday from 8-11 p.m. The Fairmount is located at 401 S. Alamo,
