Sound and the Fury

S.E.L.F., the four-headed creative monster hatched from local hip-hop collective Lotus Tribe, ushers in its new CD this week with release shows in San Antonio and Austin.

S.E.L.F. (Self-Expression is Living Free) is the name applied to the combination of MCs Jason (TRINIT-i) Torres and Mark (The Reason) Gonzalez, MC/producer Jacob (Aura) Lopez, and aural alchemist Diego (Aether216) Chavez. The foursome’s new disc, The Art & War of Misanthrophic Philanthropy was four years in the making and will receive a substantial national push, with Fanatic, the hip New York-based promotional company, servicing the disc to media and S.E.L.F. launching an east coast and midwest tour in July.

S.E.L.F. celebrates its CD release on Saturday, June 16 at Limelight (2718 N. St. Mary’s), with Dance Like Robots, Virtual Vertigo, and AM Architect. Showtime is 9 p.m. Call 737-5900 for more info. …

It’s not the most natural merging of art forms, but Lune Fine Music Club (6740 San Pedro) recently launched Jazz Y Jokes, a weekly, month-long series which brings together live jazz and standup comedy.

The series is running every Thursday in June, and has inevitably been overshadowed by the fact that both of this month’s first two Thursdays happened to fall on Spurs game nights (hoops fans should know that Game 4 of the NBA Finals can be seen at Luna, alongside the musical improvisation and presumed yuks). Thursday, June 14 will feature a set from the Jazz Protagonists from 9-10:30 p.m., followed by comedy performances, beginning at 11 p.m.
