Spill-Bound: Local Fests Build on SXSW's Musical Overflow

Austin's South by Southwest pulls in musical performers from all over the globe, then pays them very little for the privilege of partaking in the massive industry showcase. Not surprisingly, many of those same artists line up nearby gigs so they can gas up their vans for the return trip.

Hence San Antonio's annual SXSW spillover, which gives fans a chance to catch up-and-coming acts without forking over big money for an armband or sitting in a festival-induced traffic nightmare. This year, in addition to some notable one-off shows, a bevy of multi-day festivals is drawing on SXSW talent.

Let's start with the festivals:

• Heatwave III: For the price of one $50 pass, Paper Tiger's Heatwave III lets concertgoers check out a rocking week of spillover shows, running Monday, March 12, through Sunday, March 18. Acts include The Coathangers, Dwarves, Broncho and U.S. Girls, among others. $50, 4 p.m., Paper Tiger, 2410 N. St. Mary's St., papertigersatx.com.
• Burger Revolution VI: California's Burger Records, in conjunction local promoters, is putting on its annual S.A. fest Saturday, March 10. California punks Pity Party and Phoenix alt-country outfit Drunk Jim Outlaw and the Neon Cowboys top a bill also stocked with San Antonio and Austin talent. • Imagine Fest III: Imagine Books and Records is running its own week-long fest Sunday, March 11, through Saturday, March 17. • South By St. Mary's: Jandro's Garden Patio will present 20 touring and regional bands during a pair of free shows Friday, March 17, and Saturday, March 18. Among the out-of-towers are St. Louis-based stoner riff monsters Brother Lee & the Leather Jackals and cheeky L.A. rockers Pacific Radio. Free, 6 p.m., Jandro's Garden Patio, 2623 N. • SXBangBang: Bang Bang Bar gets into the spillover action with a week's worth of shows running Monday, March 12, through Tuesday, March 20. Saturday, March 17, includes a St. Paddy's Day rockabilly showcase, while the following night pairs two disparate L.A. performers, electro-dance punks WASI and honey-voiced pop singer Trishes. • Divide & Dissolve: Australia's Divide & Dissolve, which uses heavy, doomy sounds to empower black and indigenous people, will drop in for a gallery show on Sunday, March 11. • Lil Xan: On Sunday, March 3, Alamo City Music Hall will host the California-based rapper, who charted with "Betrayed" then drew the ire of hip-hop fans for calling Tupac "boring."
