This month it's all about education because, hey, the children are our future. Want the future out of your hair this summer? San Pedro Playhouse is joining the ranks of local theaters offering summer youth programs with its STAR (Student of Theater ARts) musical theater camp. Programs are available for 2nd - 5th graders (9 a.m.-noon) and 6th grade through high school (1-4 p.m.), and include acting, singing, dancing, and stagecraft skills. Three, three-week sessions are offered, each of which will cover different material on topics including auditioning, rehearsal, performance, and professionalism, and culminate in a performance for family and friends. Sessions begin June 6, June 27, and July 18, and SPP is promising small classes and experienced, professional teachers, all for $200 per session. Call 733-7258.
'The real world' the workshop
The abridged version, for ages 15 and up, is available through the San Antonio Theatre Coalition, which kicks off the second year of its interactive workshop series with Careers in Acting, Saturday, May 21, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Alamo Street Theatre, 1150 S. Alamo. The event is billed as an opportunity to learn the skills necessary to succeed as a performer in the industry, but SATCO hopes to appeal to both career-minded actors and theater hobbyists. Participants are encouraged to come with questions and are asked to prepare a one-minute monologue, as they will work with and be critiqued by industry professionals. Panelists confirmed at press time included Kristy Martin, owner of Calliope Talent, Model and Artist Management, Sharon Newport, managing producer at SeaWorld, and Kay Coleman of the Austin/San Antonio Actor's Equity Liaison. The more you laugh ...
If your kids are at Trinity University, then you clearly believe in investing in your future. Here's a little of what you'll be investing in: Trinity's theater arts department has announced its 2005-06 season, titled "A Season of Fun with the Masters of Language." Noel Coward's bohemian house-party, Hay Fever, will lead off in late September, followed by Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing in November, and Marivaux's (think the love-child of Shakespeare and Moliere) princess-power piece, The Triumph of Love, in February. The season concludes with Cole Porter's Anything Goes, a musical packed full of much-hummed oldies-but-goodies. Yes, they're all comedies. That might be why they're calling it "A Season of Fun..."
