Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: A Raisin in the Sun

A Raisin in the Sun post

The anticipation of a $10,000 life insurance check drives A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry’s seminal American drama inspired by her family’s pivotal 1940 Supreme Court battle surrounding a covenant that barred African Americans from purchasing or leasing land in a Chicago neighborhood. In a cramped apartment, members of the Younger family clash over how the money should be spent: widowed Leona hopes to buy a home in an entirely white neighborhood; her son Walter Lee wants to open a liquor store; and her daughter Beneatha dreams of going to medical school. Hansberry made history as the first black female playwright to have a play produced on Broadway, where it debuted in 1959 and earned four Tony nominations. Bill Lewis directs the Renaissance Guild’s production. $21-$26; 4pm Sun, Feb 17; Jo Long Theatre, 226 N Hackberry, (210) 207-2234, Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here:
