Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: Hetaerae

Elevated to statue-worthy status by such legendary beauties as Aspasia of Miletus, consort of Pericles, hetaerae (often translated as courtesans — prostitutes with a courtly, upper-class clientele) comprised a desirable crew of talented, educated resident aliens and slaves who entertained some of the most powerful men in ancient Greece. Fusing “religious and sexual fetish imagery, Sumerian mythology, pole dance, stripping, and Goddess iconography,” Laurie Rae Dietrich’s provocative new “theatre ritual” Hetaerae looks at these performers and sex workers as “extensions of the divine.” Through a series of linked vignettes, Monessa Esquivel, Brandyn Miller, S.T. Shimi, and Dietrich “excavate” roles women have inhabited and attempt to “heal the violent separation of sacred and scapegoat.” $12-$15, 8pm Fri-Sun, The Sterling Houston Theater at Jump-Start, 108 Blue Star, (210) 227-5867,
