Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: In the Heights

In the Heights blog image

Vibrant characters with big dreams bring New York’s Washington Heights to life onstage in Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes’ In the Heights. Employing Latin pop and rap to explore love, life, and belonging in the barrio, the musical orbits around Usnavi, a Dominican bodega owner named after one of the first sights his parents saw in America — a U.S. Navy ship. Taking shape in a format theater critic Charles Isherwood likened to a “salsa-flavored soap opera,” In the Heights introduces a Stanford dropout, a sassy salon owner, a graffiti artist, the owners of a gypsy cab company, and the honorary “abuela” of the hood in a series of snappy vignettes. The four-time Tony winner lands at the Woodlawn under the direction of Greg Hinojosa with a live soundtrack courtesy of Bombasta. $15-$23, 3pm Sunday, Woodlawn Theatre, 1920 Fredericksburg, (210) 267-8388, Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here:
