Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: "New, Newer, Newest"

Founded in 1994, San Antonio’s own SOLI Chamber Ensemble was among the first chamber ensembles invited to perform at South by Southwest. Winner of a 2013 CMA/ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award, the ensemble (Ertan Torgul, violin; Stephanie Key, clarinet; Carolyn True, piano; and David Mollenauer, cello) puts a fresh spin on 20th- and 21st-century classic music, but also commissions original pieces and has premiered upwards of 30 works by established and emerging composers including Steven Mackey, Paul Moravec, Ned Rorem, Robert X. Rodriguez, Tim Kramer, David Heuser, Alexandra Garner, and Jack Stamps. Organized as a musical journey through time, SOLI's latest program New, Newer, Newest progresses from Tania Leon’s “Arenas d'un tiempo” (1992) through David Stocks’ “Sonidos de la Noche” (1994), Thomas Ades’ “Court Studies from the Tempest” (2005), George Heathco's “Shifting Landscapes” (2011), and the world premieres of local composer and musician Marcus Rubio’s “3 Movements for Amplified Violin and EFX Pedals” and Houston-based Rob Smith’s “EP (Extended Play).” The artists and composers lead a pre-concert talk at 7pm. $10-$20, 7:30pm, Ruth Taylor Recital Hall, Trinity University, One Trinity, For tickets, call (210) 317-8816 or visit Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here:
