Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: The Brent Watkins Trio: "The Sound of the Trio"

For Brent “Doc” Watkins, paying tribute to the late Oscar Peterson isn’t the most obvious choice. As far as jazz piano masters go, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, and Thelonious Monk all would have been better known subjects. He also couldn’t have picked a tougher figure to emulate than Peterson, whose lightning runs across the keyboard are the stuff of jazz legend. Of course, if there’s any pianist in town who could take on such a towering figure, it’s Watkins, who through his handful of bands has established himself as a reliably versatile and entertaining musician. Augmented by an ace trio — Tyler Jackson on double bass and Dean Macomber on drums — the group individually have taken to the stages of Carnegie Hall, the Grand Ole Opry, and Radio City Music Hall. $25-$50, 7:30pm, Charline McCombs Empire Theater, 226 N St. Mary's, (210) 226-3333, Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here:
