Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: The Fruit Hunters

Chinese-Canadian director Yung Chang (Up the Yangtze, China Heavyweight) spent two years following fruit-obsessed horticulturalists, pomologists, and backyard enthusiasts to create The Fruit Hunters, a documentary inspired by Adam Leith-Gollner’s book The Fruit Hunters: A Story Of Nature, Adventure, Commerce And Obsession. In his cinematic odyssey around the world, Chang explores how intertwined we are with fruit via encounters with the likes of actor Bill Pullman, whose Hollywood Hills backyard boasts an orchard with more than 100 fruiting plants; Juan Fernando Aguilar, a Honduran breeder searching for a replacement for the Cavendish banana; and “fruit detective” Isabella Dalla Ragione, whose Umbrian orchard of forgotten fruit harbors varieties discovered by analyzing paintings from the Renaissance era. In his director’s statement, Chang suggests, “You may want to have a bowl of fresh fruit in arm’s reach. The filmmakers are not responsible for any hunger pangs that may result from viewing.” Alamo Drafthouse screens the 2012 film as part of its 2013 Docurama Slate. $9.50, 7:30pm Wednesday, Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes, 1255 SW Loop 410, (210) 677-8500, Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here:
