Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: The Rite of Spring

The Rite of Spring post image

Third in a string of collaborations between composer Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, The Rite of Spring draws from tribal ceremonies and Russian folk music to illustrate the creative power of spring. Discordant and avant-garde, the original 1913 production was so radically modern that the Paris premiere caused a “terrific uproar” with audience members attacking one another and throwing “everything available” at the orchestra. While Stravinsky’s orchestral work gained approval gradually, Vaslav Nijinsky’s choreography vanished until dance historian Millicent Hodson restored it (from sketches, photographs, and recollections of survivors), allowing the Joffrey Ballet to resurrect the production in 1987. ARTS San Antonio brings the revered N.Y. company to the Lila Cockrell for a performance celebrating the ballet’s centennial. $29-$110, 7:30pm, Lila Cockrell Theater, 200 E Market, (210) 226-2891, artssa.org. Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here: calendar.sacurrent.com.
