Sunshine Bakery Reopens Next Week with Familiar Management

There will be new faces behind the counter at Sunshine Bakery as it reopens on the city's East Side.

But instead of new owners razing the building, the 40-year-old bakery will return from its yearlong hiatus with new management. Cousins Kayla Matta and Crisaeus Valadez, granddaughters to original owner Juan Valadez, are reopening Sunshine Bakery on June 2 with a block party from noon to 5 p.m.

Matta, owner of Pan Dulce Gallery, will helm the kitchen and is using her training in the service industry to make classic panadería goodies such as cuernitos, conchas, sugar cookies and marranitos. New additions will include churros mini chocoflans, and macarons, but Matta's also adding vegan options for customers including Mexican chocolate, chai and matcha conchas at $2 each and vegan pink cake at $3 a slice.

Espresso-based drinks will also include matcha and horchata lattes, and a Latte Popular made using La Popular Mexican chocolate as base.

For her part, Valadez, a interior design student, is outfitting the shop's interiors and handling front of house operations.

The re-opening block party will feature DJ sets by Deadwax Collective, GSK Cumbia, and DJ San Quilmas, along with vendors Krstipop, St. Sucia, Mothership Handmades, Tejana in Space, Collective Cosmica, Mauro de la Tierra and Natazianatazia.

The pair is taking over the reins after their grandfather retired last May. He spends his time on his ranch with his animals, enjoying the quiet, but the cousins say he's "low-key" excited for the opening.

Preserving his legacy was but one of the reasons they decided to reopen the bakery.

"We love the neighborhood and didn't want to see it go away with some big company buying the building and tearing it down," Matta said. "We wanted to help preserve the culture as much as we can."
