In a highly anticipated announcement for state Democrats, Texas Sen. Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio) made her bid for Lieutenant Governor official this morning. In a packed gymnasium at San Antonio College, Van de Putte criticized current GOP leadership for their failures in public school funding, infrastructure and health care and vowed to protect the needs of working class families, women and veterans if elected Lt. Gov. “Texas families deserve better than they’ve been getting. Texas can do better than this. And that’s why I announce that I’ll ask the people of Texas to hire me to be your next Lt. Governor,” said Van de Putte. Van de Putte was introduced by her daughter Nichole, a practicing OB-GYN in San Antonio’s Southside and was accompanied by her younger brother and his Mariachi band that serenaded the crowd before the senator went on stage. -Mary Tuma
